The 5 Levels Of Hoarding:

​

Level 1:  hoarders gather simple clutter that bears little influence on the functionality of a home. It is common for houses around the world to experience this level of clutter either constantly or on occasion. 

​

Level 2: hoarding is identified by the inability to utilize horizontal surfaces such as countertops, tables, window ledges, etc.. At this stage, the home is still accessible and functional. 

​

Level 3:  hoarding often results in clutter amongst the perimeters of the rooms. Closets and cupboards are overflowing and piles of clutter encroach on spaces that are then deemed non-functional. The accessibility and usability of many areas of the home are therefore threatened.

 

Level 4:  hoarding is determined when clutter fills all  functional spaces. The clutter now impacts mobility throughout the home and certain rooms may be completely inaccessible.  Often rodents and insects live in the home at this stage and certain utilities and appliances (such as  gas, electricity, plumbing, stoves, and refrigerators) may be non-functional.  Level 4 is considered a moderate to severe situation.

Level 5:  hoarding is a completely filled house with either narrow pathways or no pathways at all. Rooms can be filled from floor to ceiling and are often completely inaccessible. Traffic into and out of the home is difficult or next to impossible.  Rodents and pest infestations are common in addition to biohazards in the form of human and animal waste. Gross filth is prominent and both cosmetic and structural damage threaten the well-being of the home and its occupant.  Level 5 is the most severe and dangerous kind of hoarding.
